FYST Telescope Explores Universe's Early Epochs

The Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) is located in Chile’s Parque Astronómico Atacama. The telescope, a Cornell-led project, will help scientists study star and galaxy formation from the earliest periods of the universe, including the “cosmic dawn” and “cosmic noon.” Researchers hope that FYST will improve our understanding of cosmic inflation, gravitational waves from the Big Bang, dark matter, and dark energy.

FYST is named after Cornell University alum Fred Young (’64, M.Eng. ’66, MBA ’66) and is part of the CCAT Observatory project. The project is operated by a partnership of Cornell University, a consortium of German astronomical institutes led by the University of Cologne, and a consortium of Canadian universities led by the University of Waterloo. The effort is carried out under an agreement with the University of Chile and is supported by Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
