ESC Vesicles Delay Aging, Enhance Regeneration
Researchers at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine have made progress in understanding how embryonic stem cells (ESCs) protect other cells from oxidative stress and cellular aging. The study, published on Oct. 14 in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, focused on tiny sacs called extracellular vesicles that are secreted by ESCs.
In the study, researchers isolated vesicles from mouse embryonic stem cells and added them to petri dishes containing differentiated cells. The results showed that cells treated with these vesicles continued to grow and did not experience senescence, the stage where cells stop dividing and lose proper function.
The research team, which included doctoral student Shun Enomoto and distinguished professor Richard Cerione, as well as associate research professor Marc Antonyak, noted that the vesicles helped delay cell aging. Their findings add to previous studies which indicated that extracellular vesicles can support wound healing and tissue regeneration.
The study provides a clearer understanding of how ESC-derived vesicles may contribute to cellular regeneration and maintenance, shedding light on a potential new pathway to delay the effects of aging.
