Floating AquaPraça Debuts at Venice Biennale

A new installation called AquaPraça made its debut at the Venice Architecture Biennale earlier this month. The work, situated at the Italian Pavilion, is a floating public plaza transported by water and designed to respond to changes in sea level, occupation, and ecological conditions.

AquaPraça was created by architects J. Meejin Yoon and Eric Höweler in collaboration with CRA–Carlo Ratti Associati. The structure uses principles of displacement and buoyancy to maintain a minimal freeboard, the space between a ship’s waterline and its deck, as it retains and releases water.

J. Meejin Yoon, who serves as dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, said the installation is intended as a platform for deepening understanding of sea level rise and the impacts of climate change on urban communities.

After its display in Venice, AquaPraça is scheduled to travel to Belém, Brazil. It will be featured at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in November 2025 before becoming a permanent installation in the city.
