LaFargeville Students Revitalize Court with Cornell Support
In LaFargeville, a small community north of Watertown, New York, a group of students from LaFargeville Central School has begun revitalizing a neglected basketball court near the school. The court, once characterized by cracked pavement, trash, and missing nets on some hoops, is now the focus of a project aimed at creating a safe, clean gathering space for local teens.
Students, including senior Ella Hunneyman, are working on the project with the support of Cornell Cooperative Extension Jefferson County and Cornell University experts. Their work includes resurfacing the basketball court, making the parking lot safer, improving drainage, installing nearby lighting, and organizing youth volunteers to maintain the site.
The project is part of Cornell programs that develop advocacy and leadership skills among young people. The initiatives are carried out in coordination with the Town of Orleans, New York, and aim to provide a new hotspot for community gathering near the school.
