Cornell Pre-Orientation Boosts First-Gen Confidence

Forty students participated in the First at Cornell pre-orientation program from August 14 to 17. The event, held during the transition period before new student move-in and the first week of classes, is designed to ease the transition to college for first-generation students and their families at Cornell University in Ithaca.

Durjoy Bhadra ’29, a global development major in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, shared that the program helped build confidence. “Before this program, I was initially really nervous and scared, and I wouldn’t take initiative and go somewhere if I was really scared about it,” he said. “But after this program, I’m ready to go visit all the offices on campus. I feel like I’m more confident in myself, and when I need help – I’m willing to build connections and get that extra help.”

The program continues Cornell’s efforts to support first-generation students as they navigate their transition to college life.
