Teacher’s Food Pantry Program Receives Refrigerator Boost

Mariah Pelzer, a teacher at Boynton Middle School, began a food pantry to help students facing food insecurity. When she learned that some students did not have enough food at home, she needed a free refrigerator to store fresh items. With help from Cornell Dyson students, Pelzer received a like-new refrigerator in December. The donated appliance helped launch the community market, which now supports more than 15 households in the Ithaca City School District.

This initiative is part of a larger program in which 73 refrigerators were delivered to regional pantries this academic year, with an additional 10 to 15 refrigerators scheduled for delivery. The project is supported by students enrolled in courses taught by Stephen Shu, Daniel Hooker, and Adam Brumberg as part of the Grand Challenges curriculum at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business.

Information about the project was reported by Cornell University in Ithaca.
