Andrew Arena, a computer science major from Cornell University’s Arts & Sciences college, was recently named one of four new chimesmasters after a 10-week audition process. Arena, who first experienced the Cornell Chimes as a high school student when he listened to Bach in McGraw Tower, auditioned alongside nearly two dozen other Cornell students in the spring of 2025.

During the audition period, Arena climbed up McGraw Tower nearly every day and, on several occasions, even ran because of his excitement for the opportunity. In late April, he along with three others received notification of their selection to join the chimesmasters—a tradition at Cornell that extends back nearly 125 years.

Arena, who has experience playing piano and violin, expressed his appreciation for both the instrument and the history associated with the chimes. For more details about the audition process, interested readers may visit the Cornell alumni website.
