Cornell Unveils Tool to Map US Wild Bee Diversity

Cornell University researchers have developed a new tool to help track and estimate the diversity of wild bees across the eastern and central United States. This tool was created by combining data from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird program, satellite land cover information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and previous wild bee surveys.

The study found that incorporating bird data with satellite imagery produced better predictions of wild bee diversity than using satellite data alone. Researchers noted that bees and birds show overlaps in nesting and foraging behaviors, as well as similar responses to habitat conditions.

The tool is publicly available and is expected to be especially useful for conservation groups. Early results have identified agricultural regions in the Midwest that still support diverse wild bee communities, suggesting these areas could become protective strongholds for wild bees if conservation measures are put in place.
