Cornell Study: NY Dairy Farms Cut Emissions

Cornell University researchers have found that a group of 36 medium to large dairy farms in New York state produced lower greenhouse gas emissions per gallon of milk than the national average in 2022. The study focused on farms that use sustainable practices such as growing a large portion of their own high-quality feed and managing manure effectively, rather than relying on outside fertilizers and specialized manure treatment systems.

The research, which establishes the first regional baseline for dairy farm emissions using real farm data, showed that these practices contribute to both high milk yields and lower emissions. The findings were reported by Olivia Godber, a research associate with the Cornell Nutrient Management Spear Program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.

Further details on the study can be found at the Cornell University news website.
