Cornell Hotel Ezra Conference Overcomes Renovation Challenges
At Cornell University in Ithaca, Statler Hall is undergoing renovations that have affected the facilities available for the 100th annual Hotel Ezra Cornell conference. The building now houses a four-foot fake peacock in the Silver Birch Suite, stacks of commemorative Teddy bears in an unused office, and a meeting room resembling a grocery store with boxes of dry goods such as oil, sugar, and chips.
Due to the renovations making the food lab and planning spaces unavailable, student organizers have had to find creative solutions to host the conference. Sarah Newcomb ’25, the managing director of this year’s event and a hotel administration major at the Cornell Nolan School of Hotel Administration, explained that the team has faced unique challenges in arranging food services without a dedicated kitchen.
The conference, organized entirely by students who handle everything from the theme and programming to food service and cleanup, is supported by a board of directors who are appointed by an advisory committee of faculty and staff. These board members enroll in the HADM 4910: Hotel Ezra Cornell course, earning three credits each in the spring and fall.
The event begins today.
