Cornell Exhibit Explores History of Big Red Pennants

Cornell University has a long history of Big Red memorabilia, including stick pins, game tickets, programs, banners, and many other items that celebrate school pride. One longstanding item is the triangular felt pennant, which is usually red and features bold lettering along with a logo or insignia. These pennants have been used in different ways at Cornell, representing general school spirit, athletics, specific colleges or majors, clubs, and class years.

Exhibitions coordinator Kate Carlin of the Rare and Manuscript Collections in the Kroch Library detailed how the display in the Kroch Library rotunda explored the many interpretations of Big Red pennants and banners. The exhibit also includes information on the historical origins of small triangular flags, which date back to the Middle Ages when knights carried them, and later served as communication tools when flown from ship masts.

For more details about the history and significance of Cornell's pennants, additional information is available on the Cornell Alumni website.
