Coach Schafer Delivers Rousing Last Lecture at Cornell

Mike Schafer ’86, the Jay R. Bloom ’77 Head Coach of Men’s Hockey, delivered his first “Last Lecture” on April 23 in Baker Lab at Cornell University. Schafer, who will soon retire after a 30-year coaching career at his alma mater, was invited by Sullivan Mack ’25, the team’s third-leading scorer, to participate in the series.

Describing the idea of giving such a lecture in an academic setting as “intimidating,” Schafer spoke passionately for nearly an hour. His lecture centered on the importance of hard work, having a “growth mindset” that emphasizes continuous improvement, and the value of contributing to one’s team, family, and community.

He encouraged listeners to consider how they would use success to help others, asking, “Are you going to help others? Are you going to be in service to others? Are you going to use it wisely and be a strong person in your community?”

This event marked a significant moment in the “Last Lecture” series, as it was Schafer’s first time delivering such a talk.
